Well -  after many years of wishing I could sing – I have finally taken my first singing lesson! I had such a wonderful time: it was so liberating and exciting. Something to add to the guitar ….

As I was driving home, I remembered that I have several cousins – all on the one side – who have an interest in music, two of which work as musicians/singers. We have not grwon up together, but still have that interest. Where did it come from?

I think I now have another avenue of research!

How did they cope?!

As we swelter through a humid Aussie day in New South Wales – let’s remember out ancestors from the northern regions who were used to cold and snow – what a shock it must have been! And without air conditioning!

Australia Day

Author: Who the hell am I? | Filed under: General updates

I hope everyone had a wonderful Australia Day yesterday.

I think that it is a good time to remember that there is a place to celebrate the fact that we live in a country that, compared to many other countries in the world, is a wonderful place to live.

While some were born here, some were forced here and others chose to come here – we are all Australians and should be proud to be so. Australia day should be a day to put aside our differences. There are 364 other days for battles.

Leave something for them

I have taken the opportunity of a horrible rainy day to take up my son’s work pants and catch up on recorded TV shows. While watching an episode of Who’s Been Sleeping in my House? I was amazed at the wealth of genealogy that also comes out in this show. I have just seen a wonderful idea: a family in the early 1800s kept records such as favourite colours, musicians etc of each family member. Journals were also a wealth of information of the daily lives of the parents of the family.

What a wonderful legacy to leave! I must start something like that …..

Tilly and Kate

Author: Who the hell am I? | Filed under: Education

I just finished the research for a presentation I am giving tomorrow on Kate Leigh and Tilly Devine. I could spend so many more hours on this: yes – they are criminals. but they are fascinating none the less. The hardest part was deciding what to put in and what to leave out. Do it as a history lecture or a genealogical lecture? I hope my combination of both as interesting for my audience as it was for me. I will post it here once I have ‘tried it out’ tomorrow.

It is important to realise and acknowledge that genealogy is history: to me, an interest in one leads to an interest in the other. I just can’t decide which came first ….

Two birds with one stone

I just came back form three days in Sydney – a visit with two purposes. Firstly, I was attending genealogy courses through the Society of Australian Genealogists http://www.sag.org.au/ on Thursday, Friday and Saturday – which were very informative and enjoyable by the way! And secondly – but more importantly – my sisters came down with me to spend some time when I wasn’t at the courses.

Has anyone else but me noticed that when siblings get together, without onyone else, its like being kids again! Great but silly time had by all!

Family medical information

Author: Who the hell am I? | Filed under: Uncategorized

I had an assessment today for laser surgery to correct issues with my eyes. One of the questions was did any of my family members have any eye problems. My initial reaction was “No”. However, during the course of the examination, and as a response to comments from the opthamologist, I remembered that my mother had a lazy eye and my youngest sister had to wear patches and do eye exercises. And my own son had to do eye exercises! And, as it turns out, I have asigmatism – the first time in my whole life anyone has mentioned it to me! Knowing your family background on a medical level is so important ….
